Growing waste collection business harnesses the benefits of a joined-up solution

When Lili Waste took delivery of their first refuse collection vehicle in June 2015, they made the decision to invest in bin weighing technology. They chose to work with Vehicle Weighing Solutions and the industry leading ENVIROWEIGH system was fitted. The forward-thinking and rapidly expanding business waste collection and disposal company, based in Kent, has since expanded to offer services across London, East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Hampshire, South Wales and beyond.

“We’ve had a great relationship with VWS for over 7 years and the joined-up solution we have with PurGo and ENVIROWEIGH will grow with our business”

Fleet and Depot Manager, John Hopkins, who has worked for the business for many years, explains that after having the bin weighing fitted to their Geesink trucks, it made sense to opt for the joined-up waste management solution from VWS Software Solutions – PurGo. “As our operation has expanded and our fleet has grown, we have opened more depots across the country.

“We now have 7 depots that each operate remotely. This is made possible by the real time access to data that we have through PurGo.”

Darren Powell, Managing Director explains that “we are proud to have been the first business in the UK to adopt PurGo, and the combined bin weighing and waste software solution has enabled Lili Waste to implement a pay by weight model, charging customers fairly, only for the waste they have collected.” The data collected also allows the business to easily identify heavy bins and address this with their customers. Darren explains that “this might mean additional collections are required, as from a health and safety perspective, an excessively heavy bin can be a hazard not only for the customer, but for collection operatives.”

“We are proud to have been the first business in the UK to adopt PurGo, and the combined bin weighing and waste software solution has enabled Lili Waste to implement a pay by weight model, charging customers fairly, only for the waste they have collected.”

Understanding the true weight of each collection also enables the business to review loss-making customers, charge correctly for extra services and has ultimately resulted in additional revenue. The introduction of PurGo has enabled the business to reducing admin, to the point that there is no requirement for a manager in each depot.

Operationally, having a live system managing and recording collection activities and vehicle location means that routing can be planned efficiently, missed collections can be rerouted and ETAs can be communicated to customers. No route sheets are required, and Darren explains that “we have the flexibility to add jobs, as and when they come in.”

He adds that “Customer experience is important to us, and we now have information immediately available through PurGo, which is a powerful tool.”

The weight data and waste collection information are recorded in real time, making reporting quick, easy, and accurate. Darren explains that they run “KPI reports through PurGo, which demonstrate that our first-time collection rates have improved since implementing the
technology.”

Using the collection data, Lili Waste are also able to “visualise the routes on a map and identify opportunities to ‘infill’ sales”, says Darren. Proactively using PurGo for this purpose demonstrates the power of having access to live and dynamic data and the revenue opportunities it presents. From a Drivers’ perspective, jobs are sent to them on their in-cab Getac devices. John says that “feedback from the drivers has been positive and the software is simple to use, intuitive and has reduced the paperwork that has to be completed on a collection.”
